Maria Gorodeckaya: Fiction

Please join us for an evening of poetry readings to celebrate the launch of artist Maria Gorodeckaya‘s latest publication in collaboration with 5b to accompany our exhibition Post-Soviet Visions: image and identity in the new Eastern Europe.

Fiction by Maria Gorodeckaya is a zine that consists of poetry about and photographs of boys taken over the last two years.

In Russia, one mainly sees women on the pages of magazines, and women are not socially trained to objectify men. What happens when the gaze is reversed? The visual languages for objectifying men have often been developed by gay photographers and filmmakers. Treating herself as a subject of culture, Maria investigates whether there’s a difference from what she produces to what is already there.

Maria will be reading her latest poetry alongside artists Felix KalmensonMegan Nolan and Ryan Swindlehurst.
