Join us as we examine the work of six young artists from Lithuania and the distinctive aesthetic of contemporary photography coming out of the country today with curator and artist Paul Paper.

The discussion will trace Lithuanian photography from prior to the country’s independence in 1990 – and the establishment of its school of humanist photography – through to present day contextual projects and artistic experiments, all the while examining the implications of the art form for national identity.

The talk will present the work of the following artists: Andrew Miksys, Indrė Šerpytytė, Paul Herbst, Ugnė Straigytė, Visvaldas Morkevičius, and Geistė Kinčinaitytė.

Paul Paper will be in conversation with Associate Editor of The Calvert Journal, Liza Premiyak.

A drinks reception will be generously provided by the Lithuanian Cultural Institute.

About Paul Paper

Paul Paper (b. 1985 in Vilnius, Lithuania) is a curator, artist, and a PhD candidate at Middlesex University. He is the co-editor of Like There’s No Tomorrow (Rupert, 2013), a book on young Lithuanian photography. Paper’s recent curatorial project “Blog Re-blog” (Austin Center for Photography, 2014) reflects the challenges of curating photography in a network-empowered culture.
