We’re delighted to be presenting the UK premiere of Elixir, the next film as part of New East Cinema, our programme of contemporary cinema from the New East curated by The New Social.
After the screening, we’ll be joined by the film’s director Daniil Zinchenko via Skype for a Q&A with moderator Alex Anikina.
Elixir
Russia, 2016, dir. Daniil Zinchenko, 80 mins
In this parable about modern-day Russia, a scientist and his assistant are collecting the ingredients for an elixir. Their goal is to resurrect the dead. Meanwhile, officials search for a carpenter who has the power to transmute water into oil.
Daniil Zinchenko’s debut feature is a work of contemporary art as much as cinema, and revolves around two central metaphors: the horizontal physical life, with its quest for happiness, love, and universal solidarity; and the celestial vertical, with its dream of resurrection and eternity. Inspired by Andrei Platonov’s writings, this contemporary fairy tale is a story of scientists, guerilla fighters, cosmonauts, government officials who roam around in a Motherland where each character represents a certain type, or a way of thinking.

New East Cinema is a bi-monthly film series curated by The New Social, presented by Calvert 22 in collaboration with the Barbican Centre, which looks across eastern Europe, the Balkans, Russia and Central Asia to uncover the most thought-provoking, daring and vibrant cinema coming from today’s “New East”.
About Alex Anikina
Alex Anikina is an artist-researcher and filmmaker from Moscow, currently a PhD candidate at Goldsmiths, University of London. Her artistic and academic practices both revolve around the technology of film, non-human subjectivity and artificial life. Anikina participated in the 6th Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art and the 4th and 5th Moscow International Biennale for Young Art; screened at HKW, Berlin, Anthology Film Archives, New York, NCCA Moscow; and participated in festivals internationally. Her works are held in the collection of the National Centre for Contemporary Arts, Moscow.

A deposit of £5 will be taken in lieu of a ticket, which will be fully refunded when you attend the event or send someone else in your place. Not attending the event and not sending anyone else in your place will mean you lose your deposit.

We have a 12-hour cancellation policy, meaning you can cancel your ticket up to 12 hours before the event start time by emailing [email protected] and the deposit will be refunded to your account. For any cancellations made outside this time frame the deposit becomes non-refundable.
