Filmmaking Masterclass with Andrey Zvyagintsev

We are pleased to announce that critically lauded Russian film director Andrey Zvyagintsev will share the secrets of his craft in a detailed and intimate masterclass at Calvert 22.

Award-winning director of The Return (2003), The Banishment (2007), Elena (2011) and last year’s international hit Leviathan (2014), Zvyagintsev is known for dark and intimate family dramas that share a starkly minimalist, and hauntingly beautiful, aesthetic. At Calvert 22, he will be exploring practical details of filmmaking and of his own process as a director, covering such questions from screenwriting and casting to framing and composition and editing and post-production.

The masterclass, which will be followed by a Q&A, will be entertaining and informative not just for professional and amateur filmmakers, but also for cinephiles who want to learn more about the technical and practical aspects of filmmaking.

To mark this special occasion, Zvyagintsev will be signing copies of Elena: The Making of Andrey Zvyagintsev’s film (Cygnnet) after the event. The book is a detailed foray into the behind-the-scenes universe of the film, captured in interviews, diary entries made during shooting, written correspondence, masterclasses and conversations with the general public.

In collaboration with Cygnnet Publishing

The masterclass will be in Russian with English translation.
