Dreaming the Lost Collective: Eastern European Culture Past & Present

Agata Pyzik launches her new book Poor But Sexy: Culture Clashes in Europe East and West. Focusing on the art of Eastern Europe during and after the Cold War, Pyzik explores why work produced behind the Iron Curtain is often dismissed rather than celebrated for its richness and originality.

Pyzik will be joined in conversation by Professor David Crowley, Head of Critical Writing in Art and Design at the Royal College of Art, London. Topics of discussion will include popular music of the 80s Eastern Bloc and their relations with the West, interpretations of Socialist Realism and how socialist countries rebuilt their culture after the war.

Free event. Booking essential.

The exhibition will stay open until the start of the event.
